Starý indický příběh vypráví o trojici slepců, kteří se doslechli, že do jejich města dorazí zvláštní zvíře – slon. Nikdy se se žádným slonem nesetkali, a tak nikdo z nich netušil, jak takový slon vlastně vypadá. Když se jim naskytla příležitost, každý se hned snažil zjistit, co že je ten slon vlastně zač. Podle prvního, který nahmatal chobot, byl slon nějaký druh hada. Podle druhého, který se chytil nohy, byl slon docela určitě strom. A třetí, který se držel ucha, si byl naprosto jistý, že slon je velký palmový list. Okamžitě se začali hádat a nikdo nechtěl ustoupit, protože byli přesvědčeni o tom, že jen ten jejich názor je správný.
Nejsme i my až příliš podobní slepcům dohadujícím se kolem slona? Proč, když dnes máme tak obsáhlé, rychlé a dostupné zdroje informací, stále věříme naprostým nesmyslům? Proč nedokážeme správně zhodnotit informace, které máme k dispozici, a proč se na jejich hodnocení nedokážeme shodnout?
Častá odpověď je, že nás zachrání jen kritické myšlení. V různých článcích se dočteme, že kritické myšlení je způsob, jak se vypořádat s dezinformacemi a fake news na internetu. Jinde, že kritické myšlení je jediná cesta, jak zlepšit výsledky školního vzdělávání. Někde zase, že je to ta nejúčinnější metoda, jak zkvalitnit manažerské rozhodování. A ještě jinde, že bez kritického myšlení občanů se naše křehká demokracie už brzo zhroutí. Velmi často se o kritickém myšlení hovoří jako o zázračném receptu, který konečně vyřeší všechny naše problémy. Bohužel, podobně už o kritickém myšlení mluví už padesát let (alespoň v USA) ale žádný zázrak se zatím nekoná.
V sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech 20. století vrcholila v USA „zlatá horečka“ kritického myšlení. Byla to opravdu horečka ve smyslu nekritického (sic) nadšení pro jakoukoli formu výuky kritického myšlení ve veřejných i soukromých školách. A byla také „zlatá“ ve smyslu obrovské poptávky po komerčních kurzech a učebnicích. Jenže jak už to u podobných horeček bývá, koncem osmdesátých let přišlo vystřízlivění, začalo se ukazovat, že velká část těchto aktivit nepřináší vůbec žádné výsledky. Americká filosofická asociace na to reagovala tzv. Delfskou zprávou (Delphi report), ve které skupina odborníků pod vedením Petera Facioneho publikovala závěry diskuse o stavu a možnostech výuky kritického myšlení (Facione, 1988). Shodli se na tom, že přes mnohé neúspěchy se kritické myšlení rozvíjet dá a že snaha o výuku kritického myšlení má i nadále smysl. Poskytli přitom řadu doporučení, jak ve výuce kritického myšlení postupovat.
Přesto i mnohem současnější metaanalýzy poukazují na neprokazatelné výsledky značné části projektů výuky kritického myšlení z celého světa (Abrami et al., 2015, El Soufi a See, 2019). Zjevně ani dnes – po třiceti letech od Delfské zprávy – výuka kritického myšlení až příliš často nepřináší očekávané výsledky.
Když budeme pátrat po důvodech, měli bychom vzít v potaz článek Richarda Paula z počátku 21. století (Paul, 2005). Paul tu při hodnocení stavu výuky kritického myšlení (ve vysokoškolském vzdělávání v USA) uvedl tři hlavní důvody nízké efektivity. Prvním a stěžejním důvodem bylo to, že výuka postrádá věcný koncept kritického myšlení. Z toho přímo vyplýval druhý důvod – učitelé často předpokládali, že učí žáky kritickému myšlení, i když to, co dělali, vůbec kritické myšlení nerozvíjelo. Třetí příčinou byla převážně využívaná metoda transmisivního vyučování. Hned v úvodu Paul citoval výstižný komentář Hurda: „Příliš mnoho faktů, příliš málo koncepcí, příliš mnoho memorování a příliš málo myšlení.“ (Paul, 2005)
Je zarážející, že ani po osmnácti letech od Paulova článku stále nemáme obecně uznávanou koncepci kritického myšlení. Takovou koncepci, na které bychom mohli stavět praktické a efektivní projekty jeho výchovy. Představa o tom, co je kritické myšlení, se tak stále pohybuje na široké škále od mediálně oblíbeného odhalování dezinformací, přes čtenářskou či mediální gramotnost, až po schopnost řešení složitých manažerských problémů. Nepříjemným důsledkem neujasněnosti, co to je kritické myšlení, z čeho skládá a jak jej učit, je minimální či nulový efekt mnoha kurzů kritického myšlení.
